In this thread from April 2007, Chris Wilson (MSIE team lead) proposes—over the course of several posts—X-UA-Compatible, though without going into detail of syntax or name (everything else about it—including the fact that it was pretty much universally derided back then, and that the decision had already been taken by that point, is there, mind).It’s worth noting that pretty much all of the arguments against it were brought up in April, and—9 months later—seemingly ignored. When I said previously that it seemed to be a done deal, I wasn’t wrong.The path of least resistance for web developers who do follow the standards appears to be HTML 5. More on that later.
