I seem to remember that a lot of people hoped that this would come as part of iTunes when iPhone OS 3.0 shipped (mind you, I’d still rather the actual syncing engines from iTunes were split out into iSync—with separate release schedules to iTunes—rather than being kept in this ever-growing monolithic monstrosity).
