Some love for the BBC
If you skimmed my posts about the BBC in my blog, you might get the impression that I’m some sort of Murdoch-worshiping type who hates the BBC and everything it stands for.
You would, for the record, be wrong. Almost all of the TV that I watch that isn’t surreptitiously imported from the US is broadcast by the BBC. All of the radio is. I have friends and acquaintances who work at and with the BBC.
But, that’s not to say I don’t think it has faults. It’s a huge corporation by any reasonable standard, and you’re ever not going to get 100% of the people who work at an organisation of that size doing their jobs absolutely to the ideal. Even if they were, situations arise, things come about, bad stuff happens.
The reason why I’m so vocal in my criticisms of the BBC when it does screw up (or when it’s in danger of doing so) is that there are people who don’t like it nearly so much (such as the aforementioned Mr. Murdoch) who would relish the opportunity to seize upon some piece of misguided policy and use it to bring about the downfall of Auntie.
So, whether you’re for or against the Project Canvas JV, Dirac taking a back-seat, Freeview HD DRM, bbc.co.uk, or social media for Strictly Come Dancing, just remember that there’s an awful lot more to it, and a lot of it’s worth hanging on to.
