BBC 'must end obsession with targeting under-35s' - The Independent
This stuff winds me up. ‘Snog, Marry, Avoid’ is just harmless fun - and quite entertaining. If anyone touches ‘Pod’ I’m going after them.
I could care less about “Snog, Marry, Avoid”, but really… I’m 29. My wife is 31. 80% of the domestic TV output we watch is broadcast by the BBC. Very little of it is the supposed “under-35 target” material. Is Strictly? I’d be surprised if its audience wasn’t particularly tilted in favour of under-35s.
What about Eastenders? Top Gear? QI? Horizon? Panorama? Newsnight? Silent Witness? Wallander? Gavin and Stacey? Time Shift? Being Human? Spooks? Hustle? Great British Railway Journeys? Rachel Allen’s Home Cooking? Nigella Lawson? Citizen Smith? New Tricks? Outnumbered? Planet Earth? Doctor Who? University Challenge?
The list goes on, but how much of that is really ratings-chasing under-35s material? That’s the stuff we watch. It’s what people I know—both older and younger—watch.
I actually have a MySQL database containing all of our BBC viewing details for the past year, thanks to a bunch of scripts and the magic of iPlayer. I think I might dump it to CSV and make it available for download.
