Why Skype for iPhone

There’s been lots of buzz about Skype for iPhone, due for launch today, and lots of people asking what the point of it is.

There are a couple of answers to this:

  1. Of the 30 million iPhone OS devices sold, only 56% of those are iPhones—the rest are iPod touches.
  2. Cheap (or free) International calls don’t necessarily mesh well with the various carriers’ charging plans. Remember that it’s not just AT&T.
  3. While the utility is perhaps limited until iPhone OS 3 is released (which brings with it the background notifications framework), this theoretically gives you SkypeIn calls to the same device you receive ordinary calls on, provided you’re in range of a WiFi access point.
